Commerical Food marketing and coffee
Monday, December 7, 2009 at 1:09PM Well I am no foodie, in fact I could not cook myself out of my car but I appreciate good food and the challenge for coffee people to make coffee culinary. To the majority of us its still Joe, a reference I believe goes back to the American GI's who fought in WW2 and drank the Frankenstein coffee creation known as freeze dried coffee, well I can imagine it was fine considering the bigger picture.
Anyways since I am a coffee guy I look at supermarkets with some suspicion and because they always make sure the coffee beans are filled up in the bins and the bagged coffee is all filled up with out a gap to be seen. That tells me one of two things either non is buying or someone is filling the shelf constantly. I believe this might be a store wide policy in most larger operators but who knows.
To be fair this is not the markets fault I believe coffee is just riding the corporate grocery wave and its bigger is better to hell with freshness.
But coffee is special and fragile and you must buy it fresh and even the least expensive brewer will bring out whatever that coffee can offer.

I think my comment went bye bye. So here we are again.
I am new to the coffee business as I am lookig to purchase and install a number of coffee vending machines in my local area. I wish to know if you have heard about 'sun roasted coffee'?
What are the advantaged and disadvantages?
can the process be cost effective?
You had mentioned about the coffee being in visable containers , is that for freshness reasons?
Looking forward to reading your comments.
Eric,
Unless you are powering a roaster with solar power (not very practical) then no I have never heard of sun roasted coffee.
If you need vending style machines for your office I can send you a quote. I am installing the SAECO SG 200 currently. I offer a complete service or you can just buy the machine through me.
Seeing coffee in a supermarket with containers is just a marketing ploy, us humans love visual things, but how old is the coffee thats in those bins thats the question. I would stay away and find a local roaster like myself to ensure freshness.
Hi Pete,
I was good to see you again after all these years. Sorry we didn't have time to stop and chat.
Happy New Year!
So we're into coffee now.
I am a bit of a coffe addict. But since moving to the country, I have adopted a more "clean" style of living, so to speak. I generally buy one of two coffees; both are organic.
Lenoir-Lacroix Sortilege
Santropol Caf Mambo
These are fairly coarse blends available in Montrèal.
I noticed your fair trade/organic coffe is rather expensive relative to the coffee I buy, which I find rather expensive itself. Does it have something that would render it superior?
I am in Scarborough for New Years and almost out of coffe. I would try your organic coffee if there was an outlet here, but I don't see TO distribution on your site.
Drop me a line so we can get back in touch
